AUBURN — A Sabattus man was indicted Wednesday on charges that he stabbed his girlfriend and a man who tried to help her before barricading himself in his parents’ home in February.

Leein Hinkley, 30, was indicted on charges of attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Lisbon police said that on Feb. 17, they got a call from a resident on King Road who said there had been a stabbing and the assailant had fled.

Jennifer Alexander, Hinkley’s girlfriend at the time, had been driving a vehicle with Hinkley as a passenger, police said. They argued and she pulled into a driveway on King Road. Hinkley began to stab her. A man at that house saw it and ran to the vehicle to try to get Alexander out, according to police reports.

The man was stabbed during his efforts. Alexander was pulled from the vehicle and another good Samaritan arrived to help, police said.

Police said Hinkley drove away in the vehicle — with a 13-month-old in the back seat — to his parents’ house at 202 Williams Road in Sabattus.

Law enforcement agencies met at the Settlement Store on Route 9 with Lisbon police Sgt. Harry Moore to coordinate efforts.

Moore reached a family member of Hinkley by phone at the family home. He was told Hinkley had been there and left, taking a shotgun and ammunition and fleeing into the woods, police said.

He apparently had left the baby in the house.

A Maine State Police tactical unit arrived. At about 6:30 p.m., family members were able to subdue Hinkley and turn him over to police at their home, police said.

“The action, without question, alleviated the situation from potentially becoming more dangerous,” Lisbon police Chief David Brooks said at the time.

Alexander suffered five wounds and remained hospitalized for days, police said.

The male victim suffered one stab wound and was treated and released from a hospital.

According to court records, Hinkley is a felon with an extensive criminal history dating back to 2001.

In 2003 and 2008 he was convicted of assault; in 2004, he was convicted of violating a protection order and burglary, and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Hinkley has remained behind bars at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn since his arrest.
