WILTON — Selectmen confirmed the appointment of E. Page Reynolds as chief of police during their Tuesday meeting, and they accepted with regret the resignation of board member Irving Faunce.
By declaring a vacancy on the board, selectmen were able to shorten the nomination period for candidates for the seat. Nomination papers for Faunce’s seat are available starting Thursday and must be returned with at least 25 and not more than 100 signatures by 5 p.m. May 17. Voters will decide on the replacement during the town election and RSU 10 budget vote June 1.
Reynolds has served as interim chief since Chief Dennis Brown left the department March 14 to accept a position in Folly Beach, S.C.
As selectmen congratulated Reynolds on Tuesday, he remarked on how special the town of Wilton has become to him.
Reynolds, a retired Connecticut police officer, is currently looking for a place to live in this area, Town Manager Rhonda Irish told the board.
Hired as a lieutenant for the Wilton Police Department under Brown, Reynolds had hoped to move his family here but with one son in high school and another in middle school, the family was hesitant to make the move.
Reynolds commuted to Wilton to work his scheduled days and returned home for days off for nearly two years before submitting his resignation in December.
With more than 20 years experience as a homicide and drug investigator, and patrolman, Reynolds has used his knowledge and experience to help a young staff progress over the last year and a half, Brown said in January.
Last month, Reynolds voiced interest in the position and willingness to move here. The older son will graduate from high school this spring and the younger son begins high school next fall.
In other business, the board wants to separately discuss two new proposals for the Primary School during upcoming meetings.
One proposal includes demolition of the building and the other is for a housing project, Selectman Thomas Saviello said.
They are totally different proposals, he said. He wanted each proponent to have an opportunity to explain their ideas to the board but at separate meetings.
