LEWISTON — Igor Lovchinsky will give a solo piano recital, featuring compositions by Liszt, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff and Gershwin, on Friday, May 13, at the Franco-American Heritage Center

His repertoire ranges from Renaissance to 21st century composers, and his innovative programs often combine classical repertoire with jazz. He mades it a practice to speak to his audiences about his program.

A native of Kazan, Russia, Lovchinsky, 26, began playing the piano at age 2 and showed extraordinary accomplishment at an early age not only as a pianist, but as a composer and improviser. By age 4, he played recitals for his family and friends, and entered the Kazan Special Music School for Gifted Children.

He completed his undergraduate education at the Juilliard School and received a master’s degree from the New England Conservatory.

Lovchinsky has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Auditorium, Hartford’s Bushnell Center, Rochester’s Eastman Theater and the Ohio Theater. His appearances have included solo recitals, chamber music presentations and concerto performances with orchestra. Last June, he played several concerts in Poland, including one at the Chopin Memorial in Warsaw and another in the house in Zelazowa Wola, where Chopin was born.

In July 2010, he was a faculty member of the New Musical Generation Festival at the National School of Music and Arts in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Lovchinsky took part in the Boston premiere of Olivier Messiaen’s “Catalogue d’Oiseaux” at the New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, in celebration of the composer’s 100th birthday. He also performs as a member of the Elektra Ensemble, a trio that made a recording at the Franco center in August 2009.

The concert, the sixth and final performance of the Franco center’s 2010-2011 Piano Series, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for seniors; students 21 and younger, free. Call 689-2000 or visit www.francocenter.org. The center is at 46 Cedar St.
