GARDINER — The Open Book Players will present “The Adventures of Peter Rabbit and His Friends” on Saturday and Sunday, May 14-15, at Johnson Hall.
In the play six tales, including “Peter Rabbit,” “The Tailor of Gloucester” and “Jemima Puddle-Duck,” are interwoven with the story of the life of their creator, Beatrix Potter.
The play moves back and forth from the fantasy world Potter created to the intriguing story of Potter herself, who overcame her lonely, strict childhood — in which her writings and drawings were discouraged in the male-oriented Victorian era — to become the most widely read children’s author of all time.
Audiences will meet Potter’s governess, Annie, who narrates the play, and Annie’s children for whom many of the stories were originally written.
Kathleen Brainerd of West Gardiner portrays Beatrix Potter and Cindy Turcotte of Bowdoin plays Annie. Story characters in this entertaining and educational show are played by Christine Heckman of Monmouth; Andy Tolman of Readfield; Hannah and Travis Nadeau, Emma Christman, Isabella Coulombe, Sabrina Gauthier, Hayden Rodrigue, Casey Daigle, Catherine Daigle and Michaela Daigle, all of Litchfield; Annie Giroux of Wales; Delaney Crocker of Mount Vernon; and Samantha Wright of Gardiner.
The production is directed by Lucy Rioux.
