MEXICO — At least 15 adult education students will graduate next month, and likely more if Region 9 Adult Education Director Nancy Allen is successful with a four-week “boot camp.”

Allen told the Region 9 School of Applied Technology board Wednesday night that several students are close to receiving a high school diplomas. They need one or two courses and successful testing, she said.

She said English and math adult education staff have stepped up instruction so students will have a better chance to pass the tests.

The graduation is set for 6:30 p.m. June 6 at Mountain Valley High School in Rumford. Allen said the current qualified adult students range in age from 18 to more than 50.

The annual awards ceremony for secondary vocational students has also been set. It will be at 6 p.m. May 25, also at MVHS.

In organizational matters, the board decided to change both the time and dates for their monthly meetings to better accommodate most on the board.

Beginning with the July 6 meeting, the board will meet at 6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month.

The next meeting, already scheduled for June 8, will also begin at 6:30 p.m.

Region 9 Director Brenda Gammon advised the board to delay action on the acceptance of the 2011-12 school calendar until Western Foothills Regional School Unit 10 has determined whether to incorporate three furlough days into its calendar. Two of the high schools in RSU 10 send students to Region 9 vocational programs.

“If students don’t come (to Region 9 because of a furlough day), it won’t count as a student day,” Gammon said.

RSU 10 is currently in talks with its teachers union about the furlough days as part of an effort to reduce costs for the upcoming school year.

The board also thanked former Region 9 board member Jeff Sterling for providing a new, approximately 4- by 20-foot sign that was erected over the main entrance to the River Road school last week.
