TEMPLE — Koviashuvik Local Living School will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14. Learn about sustainable living, local food systems and folk arts. Free to the public.
Founded in Temple in 2008, Koviashuvik is a small school that teaches practical and inexpensive ways for people to live with and from their local land. A tour of the school will be given and visitors will have the chance to take part in useful folk skills. Tours start at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and include a stone root cellar, earth-bermed greenhouse, rainwater collection systems, log cabin, solar and wood fired hot water systems, vegetable gardens, alternative cooking technologies, and fruit and nut plantings.
Directions: From Farmington follow Route 43 West into Temple. Route 43 becomes the Intervale Road and bears hard to the left. Continue on the Intervale Road 1.4 more miles and turn right onto the Day Mountain Road. In 8/10 mile turn right onto the Staples Pond Road, which becomes Lake Drive. Follow until you see the sign on the right, 6/10 mile. Park on the side of the road. It is a 10-minute walk from the parking area to the school center. If anyone is unable to walk in, call ahead of time for a shuttle.
