DIXFIELD — Paul Bunyan, the legendary Maine folklore logging hero, would surely have been proud of the 80-plus young Maine logging students who pitted their brawn, skills and wits in the two-day 35th annual Loggers’ Competition that concluded Friday in Dixfield.

Four Maine high schools — Oxford Hills Regional High School of South Paris, Region 2 Technical School of Houlton, Foster Technical School of Farmington and host Region 9 School of Applied Technology of Mexico — gathered at the Mountain View Campground in Dixfield for the woodsmen Olympics.

The young lumberjacks, and Jills, competed in 18 competitive logging events, including those from yesteryear (ax throwing and log rolling) and modern skilled events involving chain saws and mechanized skidders.

When the chips finally fell, Foster Technical School won the overall competition with a combined total of 56.5 points, host Region 9 finished second with 38.5, Region 2 took bronze and Oxford Hills came in fourth with 28.5 points.

Oxford Hills Regional High School took the Sportsmanship Award,which was presented by Marc Dupuis and David Mason, the event’s co-organizers and Region 9 certified professional logging instructors.

“This is one of the most important awards of the competition,” Dupuis said, “and is voted on by the student competitors.”
