AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine and United States flags are flying at half-staff to honor police.

In accordance with a presidential proclamation, Gov. Paul LePage ordered flags flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sunday in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week, which will be observed Sunday through May 21.

President Barack Obama encouraged Americans to display the U.S. flag at half-staff from their homes and businesses Sunday.

The holiday was created by a federal proclamation in 1962.
