PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A new poll indicates only three of 10 Mainers approve of the job Republican Gov. Paul LePage is doing.

The tracking poll released Wednesday by Critical Insights puts LePage’s approval rating at 31 percent, close to 37 percent support he won at the polls in November. The approval rating numbers are similar to those posted by Democratic Gov. John Baldacci last fall before leaving office.

Pollster MaryEllen FitzGerald says about 15 percent of those polled had no opinion, meaning they’re taking a wait-and-see approach to LePage’s candidacy.

The poll was released a day after LePage signed an insurance reform bill in his biggest political victory to date. Critical Insights polled 600 Maine voters from May 5-9. The margin of error was 4 percentage points.
