SOUTH PARIS —The Mt. Ararat Eagles got away from their game plan but still got away with a win over Oxford Hills Tuesday.

Haley Michaud scored four goals, including three straight sandwiched around halftime that gave Mt. Ararat some breathing room, and tallied three assists as the Eagles held off a late Viking rally for a 10-7 win in a KVAC girls’ lacrosse matchup at the Gouin Athletic Complex.

Hannah Warren scored a game-high five goals for the Vikings and Marisa Hanning accounted for the other two.

“We didn’t play that well in the first half. In the second half, we had a lot of turnovers,” Mt. Ararat coach Sam Chard said. “We’re dropping the ball, passing the ball, forcing the plays, and we don’t need to do that. We have enough skilled players that can hold the ball and then drive if they need to.”

Mt. Ararat (5-3), the defending Eastern A champions, emerged from a low-scoring first half with a 3-2 lead when Michaud scored with 51.2 seconds left.

Michaud, a junior, struck again 45 seconds into the second half, rolling off a pick from Sara Berry and firing past Vikings’ goalie Audrey Komulainen (seven saves) for a 4-2 lead.

“Sara always knows where to be on offense. She could see an opening. There was only one defender and she just picked the defender and made it wide open for me,” Michaud said.

Less than two minutes later, another Michaud marker made it 5-2. Oxford Hills cut the deficit back to two briefly with Warren’s second goal, but Heather Bolduc (three goals) responded to spark a three-goal run for the Eagles.

After Bolduc made it 6-3, the Vikings (4-5) drew a yellow card to go a man down. Michaud connected with a cutting Hannah Hauser for a 7-3 lead then, following a Vikings time out, Hauser quickly returned the favor, collecting the draw and finding Michaud all alone behind the defense for a five-goal cushion.

“It helped that our other attackers drew the defense on to them and off of me,” Michaud said.

Rowley Jones added to the Eagles’ lead just 17 seconds later. In a 9-3 hole, Oxford Hills tried digging out with 15:28 remaining, starting with Hanning’s second goal. Warren scored back-to-back goals to make it 9-6 with 11:09 to go.

“She’s pretty strong,” Chard said of Warren. “She’s pretty fast, has a good shot and can protect the ball well. We didn’t do our job in shutting her down.”

Michaud hooked up with Bolduc to briefly break the Vikings’ momentum and make it 10-6. Warren responded by taking the opening draw and carrying it through the defense in just 11 seconds to make it 10-7, but the Eagles effectively ran the clock in the final four minutes to end their two-game losing streak.
