CARTHAGE — Canadian fiddling sensation Cynthia MacLeod, who has built an international reputation, will perform with Jon Matthews at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, May 25.

The two will also take the stage at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on Thursday, May 26.

MacLeod is known for her soft-spoken, down-home charm, high-energy fiddle playing and step dancing — often done together.

Fellow musicians have awarded MacLeod more than a dozen PEI (Prince Edward Island) Music awards, including multiple awards as Roots/Traditional Artist of the Year and Instrumental Artist of the Year. Audiences have also twice chosen her as Entertainer of the Year.

MacLeod has also produced three top-selling CDs. “Head over Heels,” in 2002, won her instant credibility and was named Album of the Year. Her second CD,”Crackerjack,” 2004, built on her growing reputation as a precise, lively interpreter of traditional fiddle music. “Hot Off The Floor,” in 2007, combined that traditional sound with newer compositions and cemented her place among the very best in East Coast fiddle music.

Matthews has carved out a full-time career in music by wearing a number of different hats: singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, engineer and broadcaster.

Onstage, concertgoers never know what role he’ll take on: frontman, guitarist, bassist, drummer/percussionist or background vocalist. As a multi-instrumentalist, he has collaborated with The Celtic Ladies and Colette Cheverie, performing in concert halls and festivals in Canada and the United States.

Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Skye and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. There will be a preshow jam session one hour prior to curtain when audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments to play with the artists for a few minutes.

For tickets, $15, call Skye 562-4445 or UCCPA at 948-7469. Skye Theater is at 2 Highland Drive in Carthage. UCCPA is at 42 Depot St., Unity.

Fiddler Cynthia MacLeod will perform with Jon Matthews at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in Carthage and Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity later this month.
