OXFORD — The possibility of creating a new Little League ball field at Pismo Beach is looking good, Town Manager Michael Chammings said.
“It’s going forward nicely,” Chammings told selectmen at Thursday’s meeting.
Chammings said he’s been in touch with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection about possible permitting issues. Because part of the field might be within 75 feet of the high-water line of Thompson Lake, the development could require a Natural Resources Protection Act permit.
“We’re just trying to meet with the state ahead of time so if we get to a point where it can’t be done, we’re done without spending any more money,” Chammings said.
He included an email between Dawn Hallowell, licensing and compliance manager at the DEP, and Robert Berry of Main-Land Development, who is working on the site plan.
The area of the proposed ball field, north of an existing ball field, is currently wooded. Removing vegetation near a shore could require a permit from the DEP, according to Hallowell’s email.
The next step is delineating where the wetlands begin, Chammings said. Once that is determined, the town will know whether the project is possible.
“It’s looking promising right now,” Chammings said.
