AUBURN — Two local United Methodist churches will host a concert by the Watoto Children’s Choir from Uganda, East Africa, on Sunday, May 29.

The free 7 p.m. performance will be presented at the Auburn United Methodist Church, 439 Park Ave.

The choir’s music and multimedia presentation is a soulful fusion of gospel and contemporary African-style music.

Watoto means “The Children,” and these children are on a mission.

Since 1994, Watoto Children’s Choirs have given “Concerts of Hope” worldwide as ambassadors for the orphan children of Uganda. Each child in the choir has lost one or both parents in the African AIDS crisis or other calamities.

The goal of Watoto is to raise the next generation of Ugandan leaders by pursuing excellence in academic and practical skills and integrity in conduct and moral values.

Watoto is currently caring for more than 2,000 parentless children by providing physical, emotional, educational and spiritual care.

This is at least the third time the choir has come to Lewiston-Auburn to share its inspirational songs, compelling stories and message of hope for Africa’s children.

Members of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Lewiston are co-hosting the event by providing overnight housing and meals for choir members. Members of the Ugandan community and other African circles in L-A are invited to the concert as special guests.
