MEXICO — Everything is shaping up for the town’s Memorial Day ceremonies, Town Manager John Madigan Jr. told selectmen Tuesday night.

“Town crews have done a great job at Mexico Greens and were able to get it looking great in three days,” Madigan said. “The crews did a superb job throughout Mexico and flags will soon be up for Memorial Day.”

Memorial Day ceremonies will take place at the Mexico Greens Memorial somewhere in the vicinity of 11:30 p.m., Madigan said. There will be a reading of all the names on the memorial, and U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, will deliver a speech at the monument.

“We have talked with her staff earlier in the week,” Madigan said, “and we learned from them that she has expressed desire to walk in the parade.”

In other business at the meeting, Chairwoman Barbara Laramee was given a bouquet of flowers to mark her last meeting as a member of the board. Laramee has served the past five years as chairwoman, and nine years in all.

Selectmen granted a hawkers/peddlers license to the River Valley Farmers Market, which opens at its Route 2 location Friday at 10 a.m.

Selectmen tabled approval for a hawkers license for a flea market on Route 2 by Dan Reed, pending review of several issues.

Selectmen approved the installation of four new stop signs at the following locations: Corner of Burton and Bucknum streets; Burton and Monroe streets; Carver and Howard streets; Brigham and Howard streets.

The Mexico Fire Relief Association will hold a toll road fundraiser June 25 from noon to 9 p.m. to raise money for an ATV for the Mexico Fire Department.

The Regional School Unit 10 budget was signed Monday night and will now go to selectmen to be signed.

Selectmen approved the only bid for the replacement of the town’s current plow truck from Portland North Truck Center for $73,290. The bidder was the same business the selectmen bought their last plow truck from five years ago.

The payment will cover the truck’s cab, chassis and motor. The plow, sander and other working parts will be done by Alex Fairchild. The total cost is expected to be around $130,000.

Selectmen, after reviewing the six bids for painting the outside of the public library, decided to table their decision until their next meeting June 28 so they could study them more.

The board approved T.W. Lawn Care’s bid of $2,600 to demolish a town-owned house at 23 Dix Ave.

The water department has decided to borrow $250,000, with very low interest rates, to put water pipelines on Osgood Street.

“It was really the best decision,” said Byron Ouellette, selectman and water district member, “when we saw the figures.”

During the Fire Department report, Chief Gary Wentzell announced that call volume had been down. He also said his firefighters had undergone extensive training.

“I think the addition of the ATV” by the Mexico Fire Relief Association “to the department will give us much better access to emergencies on the 45-48 miles of ATV/snowmobile trails in Mexico,” Wentzell said.

The next selectmen’s meeting will be June 28 when there will be a presentation on the installation of CMP Smart Meters.
