100 years ago, 1911

A Lewiston woman was arrested on Park street by Captain Walsh of the Lewiston police and locked up on the charge of intoxication. She resisted arrest violently and fought every inch of the way to the station. Attracted by her loud shouts and numerous epithets, a large number of men collected. At the station Miss Hobbs made things merry for an hour with her shouts.

50 years ago, 1961

Marcotte Chevrolet Inc. has been awarded a contract by Auburn City Manager Woodbury E. Brackett to furnish the city with a four-door sedan to be used by city officials.

The car, to be painted green, is to have a V-8 engine, automatic transmission, heater, defroster, power steering, backup and directional lights, electric clock, windshield washer, padded instrument panel and foam front seat cushion.

25 years ago, 1986

Although NBC-TV “Today” show host Bryant Gumbel is one of Bates College’s best-known graduates, he wasn’t among the Lewiston school’s top scholars.

Bates Dean of the Faculty Carl Benton Straub unintentionally pointed that out while interrupting a stream of mushy platitudes before presenting Gumbel with an honorary doctor of laws degree Monday.

“Bryant Gumbel, born in New Orleans and raised in Chicago, graduated from the college in 1970,” said Straub, reading a statement praising the broadcaster.
