MOUNT DESERT ISLAND (AP) — The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office says an elderly couple from Tremont have died following a fire at their Mount Desert Island home.

The victims are 83-year-old Edmund Branch and his 78-year-old wife, Eileen Branch.

Branch’s body was found in the rubble of the basement Friday afternoon. Mrs. Branch died early Saturday at a Bangor hospital from severe burns after being flown to the hospital.

Fire investigators are looking at commercial baking equipment in the basement as a possible cause of the fire. Edmund Branch baked for a local restaurant.

The fire was reported just before 3 p.m. Friday at the couple’s house on Route 102, in the Seal Cove section of Mount Desert Island.
