NORWAY — Town meeting voters will be asked to appropriate $10,000 to repair town cemeteries and another $10,000 to remove dangerous trees in those cemeteries, parks and along roadsides.

Holt said there are 15 to 20 trees in some of the cemeteries that need addressing. “If you don’t take them down carefully, they will take down headstones,” Holt told the Budget Committee recently as they deliberated the overall new fiscal year budget that will be voted on in June.

The $10,000 would be added to what is left in last year’s appropriation to address the dead or dangerous trees in town parks, cemeteries and along roadsides. Holt said in his report to the Board of Selectmen and the Budget Committee that it often costs many hundreds of dollars to safely remove them. 

Town Tree Warden Tish Carr and Road Commissioner Ron Springer have created a list of some of the most dangerous trees, he said.

Another $10,000, part of the proposed capital project and equipment budget, would go toward repairs at the town’s eight cemeteries, including headstones and fences that need repair.

Holt said the worst fence has been identified as one in the cemetery on the Dunn Road, but other cemeteries also need repairs, including the Rustfield Cemetery on Greenleaf Avenue.
