AUBURN — Police arrested a Lewiston man whom they believe broke into more than a dozen homes in New Auburn over the past two weeks.

He was released Tuesday morning from Androscoggin County Jail to undergo surgery for injuries he sustained a week ago when he jumped from the third story of one of the homes.

On Monday, Auburn police detectives interviewed Philip Charest, 28, of 198 Park St. in New Auburn where he had been staying with friends. He confessed to burglarizing 13 homes during daytime hours, police said. He was twice interrupted by homeowners during the break-ins; one of those times he leaped from a third-floor window.

Charest was later arrested by Lewiston police on outstanding warrants stemming from Lewiston burglaries. He was released on personal recognizance to go to the hospital.

Charest has pending cases stemming from earlier burglary charges, including four felonies. According to a sworn affidavit by a Lewiston police officer, Charest pawned several stolen items, including a Nintendo Wii, a Nintendo DS and roughly 20 video games at the Lewiston Pawn Shop, which is a couple of hundred yards from the apartment from which the stolen items came.

Charest had been free on bail for multiple counts of burglary similar in nature to the one near the pawn shop, the officer wrote in the court document.
