NEW SHARON — A New Jersey woman was injured Monday morning after she fell asleep at the wheel and the car she was driving struck a guardrail and utility pole on Route 2, Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandy Burke said.
The 2004 Nissan Annmarie Mandarakas, 22, of Randolph, N.J., was driving from New Sharon to Farmington on Route 2, initially crossed the roadway into the opposite lane, then hit the end of a guardrail and continued on to strike a utility pole, Burke said.
A small tree caught the car from going into the Sandy River, Burke said.
Mandarakas, a student at the University of Maine in Farmington, complained of chest pain and was taken by a NorthStar Emergency Medical Services ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.
She was treated and released, a FMH spokeswoman said.
Farmington and New Sharon fire rescue departments assisted Burke at the scene of the accident reported at 8:12 a.m. Both Farmington firefighters and police responded because the accident was thought initially to be in that town.
Mandarakas’ vehicle was damaged beyond repair in the accident, Burke said.
