PERU — Peru citizens resoundingly defeated two budget articles at a special town meeting Tuesday evening.
A turnout of 101 citizens packed the former Peru Elementary School-Recreation Center gymnasium for the special town meeting moderated by Don Roach.
Voters defeated Article 1, the selectmen budget recommendations to raise and appropriate $72,900, and to authorize the board to expend any receipts as needed for town operations.
Voters instead opted for a motion, by a 68-33 count, to authorize $62,900 for the budget, as advocated by the town’s Budget Committee.
Also, voters defeated Article 2, the selectmen’s recommendation to appropriate $10,000, and to authorize the the board to expend any receipts as needed for the former Peru Elementary Building/Community Center building including insurances, estimated at $2,200.
Voters passed a motion to approve no money for the former Peru Elementary School Building and Community Center.
