JAY — Selectmen announced Monday that as of Aug. 1, the town will only accept clear or translucent bags at the transfer station or at curbside pickup.

The blue bags that residents have bought from the town are considered to be see-through and may still be used, Town Manager Ruth Cushman said.

The town will continue to sell trash or recycling bags but they will be clear, she said.

Smaller, 15-gallon bags will also be sold and will be available in about two weeks.

Residents attending an open house at the transfer station in April were given some free, clear bags to use.

In a related item, selectmen agreed to put any remaining Dumpsters that no one wants out to bid. The is out of the commercial Dumpster service as of Friday, July 1.

Fire Rescue Department Capt. Justin Merrill asked if the department could have one for Station 2, across from the old town office. It would replace one that has a rotten bottom and is used to collect bottle donations at the station.

Highway Foreman John Johnson also requested to use one at the transfer station as an ash bin.

In another matter, board Chairman Steve McCourt said more volunteers are needed to serve on the town’s Road Committee. Anyone interested in serving can call the town office at 897-6785 for more information.
