PORTLAND — F. Michael “Mike” Murphy, 82, of Auburn passed away on Monday, July 4.

He was born in Lewiston, Nov. 29, 1928, the son of the late Joseph and Methyl Bickford Murphy.

He graduated from Lewiston High School and Burdette College in Boston. Upon his return from Boston, and a brief time in the Army, he joined the family business, the James P. Murphy Monument Co. as a salesman.

In 1952, he married Frances Mary Johnson and they spent 58 wonderful years together until she passed away Aug. 24, 2010. After the family business closed, he worked for the Maine State Lottery Commission as a field representative for 20 years until his retirement.

He and his wife built a summer camp on Thompson Lake and spent their summers on their beloved lake and traveled to Bradenton, Fla., where they spent their winters for many years. He enjoyed football, baseball and NASCAR and in his younger years refereed football for the Maine State High School sports program.

Survivors include a son, Michael D. Murphy and his companion, Ro-Jean Straw, of Eliot; his daughter, Kathleen Murphy and companion, Joseph Laroche, of Lewiston; three grandchildren, Erin Murphy Heise and husband, John, of Sarasota, Fla., Kayla Racioppi and husband, Nick, of Auburn and Hannah Rheaume of Lewiston; two brothers, Jim Murphy of Minnesota, and Joe Murphy and wife, Joan, of Vermont; two sisters, Joanne Hammond and husband, Richard, of Auburn and Sharon Sargent and husband, Walter, of Florida.

He was predeceased by his wife, and a sister, Theresa Levasseur.
