HEBRON — Fred Schwaner, 59, of Hebron, passed peacefully at home on Thursday, July 7, after a strong battle with cancer.

He was born March 2, 1952, the son of Frederick and Julie (Kolar) Schwaner in Southside Hospital, Long Island, N.Y. He lived a full life and will be remembered for his love for teaching, of 38 years. He began his career in Hartford-Sumner, then moved on to being a teaching principal and sixth-grade teacher at SAD 17 in Waterford, Rowe, Madison and Paris Elementary schools.

Fred graduated from James Wilson Young High School in Bayport, Long Island, N.Y. While in high school, he was state rifle champion, a member of Bayport/Bluepoint 4-H Club, Boy Scout Troop 127 and an accomplished trumpet player in the band. He was past master councilor of Charles W. Taylor Chapter Order of DeMolay, Patchogue, Long Island, N.Y.

He attended Dowling College in Oakdale then transferred to the University of Southern Maine, receiving both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He was a proud member of Delta Chi Fraternity and achieved “Mr. Fraternity of the Year.”

As an adult, he was a member of Tyrian Lodge, Masons, Kora Temple Order of the Shrine, where he was captain of the Kora Cycle Corps for seven years. He was also a member of the Oxford County Shrine Club. He enjoyed building model ships, writing poetry, caring for his home and traveling to Prince Edward Island, where he enjoyed sitting on the porch, overlooking the ocean and petting his beloved dog, Shamus.

He married the love of his life, Rosalie Milligan of Oxford on May 25, 1984. They had two children, Eleanor and Frederick.

Fred is survived by his wife of 27 years, Rose; daughter, Ellie and son, Fred, of Hebron; his sisters and their spouses, Adele and Dick Charity of Paris and Joan and Dick Deans of Hebron; and nieces and nephews, Richard and Julie Deans and Jeff and Heidi Charity.

He was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Julie Schwaner, formerly of Bayport, Long Island and Hebron.
