AUGUSTA – Pine Tree Quilters Guild announced at their May 14 meeting that Wendy Caton Reed of Bath has been selected by her peers as the 2011 Meet the Quilter. A collection of Wendy’s work will be showcased in a special exhibit at Maine Quilts, PTQG’s 34th annual quilt show, to be held July 29-31 at the Augusta Civic Center.
Wendy is an award-winning quilt maker who has been making quilts for more than 40 years. She is well known for her original interpretations of traditional designs and is very active in historic preservation. She is the co-coordinator of Maine Quilt Heritage, a special committee of the statewide Pine Tree Quilters Guild, established for the purpose of documenting the quilts and quilt makers of Maine. She is a charter member of the American Quilter’s Society and has served on the board of the American Quilt Study Group, an organization dedicated to uncovering the accurate histories of quilts and quilt related subjects.
Her quilts have received awards at exhibitions throughout the country. Her quilts have also been on display in special exhibitions at a number of art galleries and major quilt shows throughout the country, and also have been featured in many national publications.
Maine Quilts opens Thursday, July 28, with a champagne reception and show preview. More than 600 quilts will be on exhibit, including antique, contemporary and judged quilts of all sizes. Special exhibits in addition to the collection of Wendy’s work include Bear Necessities Challenge, Quilt A Wish Collection, Maine’s Quilt Heritage – Part 1 and Thread Tails and Vapor Trails. The Merchants Mall features 40 vendors from across the U.S. selling fabric, tools, quilts and other items. There will be daily lectures, free demonstrations, quilt appraisals and a silent auction of quilted items. Proceeds from the silent auction benefit the Maine Cancer Foundation – Women’s Cancer Fund.
