Same-day voter registration works in Maine. I am a ballot clerk in Woodstock and we have a system for checks and balances on registration or change-in-address forms on the day of voting. We have done this for years without a problem.
If anything, especially in rural Maine, all people — Democrats, Republicans and independents — need to be encouraged to vote. Making people come an additional time to the town office can be a burden, even more so when people are working and the town offices aren’t open late.
On Election Day, the polls are open for the convenience of a variety of working people’s hours.
I have seen an increase in registrations for certain issues that draw individual’s attention. That is great. The more people who vote, the more representative the government will be, reflecting a higher percentage of the people of Maine.
I support the people’s veto of the bill to ban same-day registration.
