DIXFIELD — The town will be visible throughout the state next February as a result of winning a statewide photo contest.

Dixfield’s entries in the Maine Municipal Association’s “Then and Now” photo contest were selected from 38 other entries to be featured in the organization’s 75th anniversary calendar.

The town’s photographs will appear in the calendar during February 2012 and will appear at the two-day MMA convention held Oct. 5-6 in Augusta.

The contest’s judging panel, made up of the three current MMA Executive Committee members, chose the Dixfield submission, with the “then” photograph of a parade going through the intersection of Weld and Main streets in 1915 and the “now” photograph taken at the same location on May 25 of this year.

The 1915 photograph was a gift submitted by Mary Vaughn of Peru to the Dixfield Historical Society, and the contemporary image was submitted by John “Chip” Towle; his 100-year-old Towle Hardware and Lumber Co. is featured in the scene.

The judges’ criteria in selecting the winners included the entry’s written description, quality, visual appearance and uniqueness.

“Their main objective was to provide a municipal calendar that would be of interest around the state,” said Theresa Chavarie, manager of the Maine Municipal Association’s Member Relations and Executive Committee.

“We’re all so very pleased to have our town represented as part of Maine Municipal Association’s historic efforts,” Gene Skibitsky, Dixfield town manager, said.

“Dixfield has certainly changed throughout the years and continues to evolve with each passing decade,” Skibitsky said. “We have a beautiful historical society that keeps us grounded and well-balanced with our past,” he said.
