DEAR SUN SPOTS: Many years ago we had a Bonanza restaurant in Lewiston. I remember that it was in the mall on Lisbon Street, also known as the “Bradlees” mall. Am I correct? And did the restaurant later move to the other mall on East Avenue? When did it close? Thanks for your information. — Louise, Lewiston
ANSWER: Sun Spots gets a lot of questions about restaurants closing. These events often don’t make the news (or closed pre-Internet), but readers frequently have personal knowledge of them and write in about their experiences. Let’s hope that’s true in your case!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I love your column. It helps so many people connect in different ways.
Over 40-plus years of doing demolition work, I have found — and put aside — many items. Maybe someone knows something about them or can put me in contact with someone who does.
* 1904 Flossie Rand report card from Webster School;
* Bates Mill check stub showing 40 hours of work with earnings of $54.40 (before deductions) dated Sept. 29, 1963;
* Advertisement shaped like a postcard from when Sam Wise was running for mayor;
* Photo taken at 365 Lisbon St. of three gentlemen standing in front of what looks like a grocery store;
* Front and back page of a Lewiston Journal dated March 4-8, 1905. On Page 15 it shows patterns that could have been ordered for 10 cents each;
* Several war medals that looked like they might have belonged to a lodge. Some say “Franco American Worcester Mass/Union Saint Joseph Council No. 159, Lewiston, Maine, 1900”; or “G.A.R. New Hampshire Veteran/G.A.R. Groveton, New Hampshire;”
* Medal ribbon that says “Camp John C. Jenness 23 Annual Encampment of the N.H. Veterans Assn. at the Weirs, August 22-26, 1899;”
* A gold medal that pins onto a uniform that says “Lieut. Clark Stevens Post. No. 95” and a Jacques-Cartier ribbon, Lewiston, Maine, dated 1972. Most of these medals and/or ribbons were made by Whitehead and Hoag and Co. in Newark, N.J.
Thanks for any help you can give me. I can be reached at 782-6042 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Please leave a message. Thanks. — Bonnie Chabot, No Town
ANSWER: The Androscoggin Historical Society may be interested in adding some of these items to its collection. You could contact them at 784-0586 or 786-2129.
