DEAR SUN SPOTS: The first Lewiston Eagles 618 “Support Our Own” motorcycle run for our men and women serving overseas will be Aug. 13.

The purpose of this run is to raise supplies and games needed and wanted by our men and women overseas — basic items like disposable razors, shaving cream, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, tampons, etc. No aerosol cans are permitted. Our hope is for each establishment to place a box in their club and allow members to drop off supplies such as these to be delivered to our men and women. Any cash donations will be used to purchase more supplies.

The ride will begin with breakfast from 10 to 11 a.m. at the New Auburn Social Club. We’ll depart from New Auburn at 11:30 a.m. with stops at New Gloucester Eagles, Windham Eagles, Gray American Legion and the Past Time Club.

The event will end at the Lewiston Eagles at approximately 5 p.m. where there will be a pig roast that is free to the riders and $5 for the public, followed by the live band “Foreplay,” which has donated its time.

Cost for the ride is a donation of one item to our cause. The ride is open to the public, offering a good time for a worthy cause. Let’s help the ones who fight for our freedom. For any information contact David Veinott at 713-2484 or me at 212-2905. Thank you. — Gail Pelletier, [email protected]

ANSWER: What a nice combination of good cause and fun. Sun Spots hopes you have a good turnout.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: From 1990 to 1994, I used to camp at Happy Horseshoe Campground in Lexington Township, just north of North New Portland. Is it still a campground and still the same name? It isn’t listed the campground guide of Maine or anywhere.

My wife bought a Kirby vacuum cleaner about six years ago. Is there a Kirby salesman in Western Maine? Thanks a lot. — Birdman, Peru

ANSWER: Sun Spots found a listing online for the Happy Horseshoe Campground (New Portland Road, North Anson, ME 04958). She has called and called the phone number (635-2965) but gotten nothing but a busy signal.

So back to Google she went, where she found another address (1100 Long Falls Dam Road, Lexington Township, ME 04961) for the Happy Horseshoe. This phone number (628-3471) is nonworking.

She then went to the reverse number look-up, where it said that 635-2965 belongs to “Ronald Dickham Sr., owner at Happy Horseshoe Campground, 596 New Portland Road, Embden, ME 04958-3642.” So it must be the right number.

There were several positive reviews of the campground online, some fairly recent, so Sun Spots is at a loss. She finds the continually busy number especially vexing.

You can keep trying until someone finally answers. Or perhaps readers will know something.

As for Kirby, they have a toll-free number (1-800-437-7170) on their website to call to locate the nearest dealer. There used to be a dealer in Westbrook, but it appears to have closed. The other one in Maine is in Bangor, so Sun Spots guesses Dover, N.H. (603-498-2804), might be closer for you.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I want to thank the readers for their generosity to Turner Elementary School for sending their Box Tops for Education.

Even though it’s summer vacation, we are still collecting toward next year’s goal. If you have any box tops or Campbell soup labels that you would like to donate to our school, please mail them to me at 5 Brookfield Estate, Turner, ME 04282. — Laurie Labbe, box tops coordinator, [email protected]
