BETHEL —The Bethel Common will be filled with music every Sunday at 4 p.m., courtesy of the 2011 Mahoosuc Arts Council Free Summer Bandstand Series. Featured will be four acts ranging in styles from folk, rock and blues, to yodeling, country and jazz.
Bring a chair or a blanket. If it rains, the free concerts will be held at the Bingham Auditorium, 45 Church St.
Kicking off the series will be the Skylark Jazz Ensemble on Aug. 7. The group offers a mix of jazz standards and other popular songs from light swing to bossa nova cool, love ballads, a little blues and even an occasional country song. Group members are Janet Gill, vocals; Carol Rhoads, keyboard; Bob Wallace, bass; and Carl Harbourt, percussion.
Bethel duo Jewel Clark & Donnie Katlin will perform on Aug. 14. The two play both old and new favorites in country, folk, blues and rock ‘n’ roll, with some originals here and there. And count on some yodeling, a talent Clark inherited from her dad, Yodeling Slim Clark.
The Blue Willow Band, a six-piece rhythm and blues/jazz band with a 20-plus year career, will play on Aug. 21. Making up the ensemble are Diana Hansen, vocals, guitar and percussion; Dave Wakefield, tenor sax, harmonica and vocals; band leader Merrill Rollins, keyboards, trumpet and vocals; Rex Rounds, guitar and vocals; Bill Hansen, bass and vocals; and Jon Bliss, drums. Their selection of tunes ranges from Robert Cray to Fats Waller.
Guitarist Bill Docos, who mixes jazz fusion with an improvised finger style, will bring the series to a close on Aug. 28. Docos taught himself to play guitar some 25 years ago and has played throughout the United States as well as in the Ukraine, Canada and Greenland. He plays electric and acoustic guitars, including his own hand-built, seven-string acoustic guitar.
