JAY — A Summer Hoe Down Celebration will be held at the “Where The Heck Are We” campground, 261 Davenport Hill Rd., presented by the Down East Country Music Association, Inc.
The event will start on Friday, Aug. 19, from 6 to 11 p.m. The Saturday show will run from noon to 11 p.m.
There will be all-day entertainment provided by lots of local talent and other entertainers throughout the area.
This event is open to the public. Admission is $5 per adult, $3 per child.
There will be 50/50 drawings, a Chinese auction and the snack bar will be open all day. Camp sites are available, call 645-4595.
Splash day
CARTHAGE — Splash Carthage Fun Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. The theme is rednecks and the fun includes pie throwing, fry pan toss, bounce house, dunk tank, horse shoes, cribbage, carnival games, antiques, clowns, face painting, raffles, flea market and a food sale.
Parade line up is at 9:30 a.m.; starts at 10 a.m. from Bradbury’s Market to the Blue Moose General Store and Camp Ground on Route 142. Grange sale
DIXFIELD — East Dixfield Grange will hold a yard/craft/food sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the East Dixfield Grange Hall. Table space is available. For more information, call 645-2423.

FARMINGTON — Paws for a Cause will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the gazebo. All proceeds go to the Franklin County Animal Shelter.

Open house
MADRID — The Madrid Historical Society will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Madrid Village Schoolhouse on the Reed’s Mill Road.
This will be a part of the celebration of Madrid’s 175th year. The museum displays include a school room display and other historic items. There are also several photos displays and albums of the schools, people, homes, mills and railroad of Madrid’s past.
The goal of the Historical Society is to preserve the history and memories of the Town of Madrid and to keep the spirit of the wonderful community alive. The society would welcome the donation or loan of any photos or items that are pertinent to Madrid’s past and its people. They are particularly interested in photos of anyone from Madrid who served in the Armed Services during any period of time. Photos can be scanned and original photos returned.
New members are always welcome. The Historical Society meets on the second Monday of the month at the schoolhouse. A potluck supper is held at 6 p.m. followed by the business meeting at 6:30 p.m.
‘Libby’s Loons’
WAYNE — Cary Memorial Library will host children’s author Nancy Prince reading her story, “Libby’ s Loons,” at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. The book was inspired by her encounters with loons on Wilson Lake in Wilton, where she has lived for most of her life. Artist Luanne Wren, also from Wilton, provides realistic watercolors to illustrate the book. Through Libby’s eyes, children can learn about these remarkable waterfowl and discover the motivation to protect the animals they love.
The program is free and all are invited. Suggested for ages four and up. The Cary Memorial Library is located at 17 Old Winthrop Road, just off Route 133 in downtown Wayne. For more information, call 685-3612.
Masonic supper
WILTON — Harnden Masonic Hall, 70 Bryant Road, East Wilton, will old a supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, to benefit the Masonic Building Fund. The menu will be beef pot roast, mashed potato with gravy, vegetables, rolls, homemade brownies with ice cream and beverages. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Gospel concert
WILTON — NewBeginnings will be in concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at the East Wilton Union Church as part of their 2011 Concerts on the Lawn series. NewBeginnings is a gospel music singing duo that offers a blend of southern, country and bluegrass music.
The concerts are held Sunday evenings in August. The concerts are free. All are welcome to attend. There will be an opportunity for a free-will offering. All concerts will be on the church lawn unless it rains, in which case the festivities will be moved inside. A time of food and fellowship will follow each concert.
