MECHANIC FALLS — The Mechanic Falls Historical Society will be hosting two events in August.

The first will be the society’s open house on Saturday, Aug. 20, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Among the items for display will be the story of Edna L. Kempton.

Edna was born July 19, 1909 in Mexico, Maine and grew up at 10 Park St., Mechanic Falls. She was the daughter of Chester and May (Hinkley) and sister of Clair Kempton. Edna was a Daughter of the Mayflower and a direct descendant of Mary Chilton, a 12-year-old passenger on the Mayflower.

Edna attended and graduated from Mechanic Falls High School in 1926, then graduated from Bliss College in Lewiston and moved to Boston in 1930.

Edna passed away in June 2010 at the age of 100 in Wrentham, Mass.

According to Irene Stahl, who was Edna’s caregiver:  “During the last 10 years of her life I was her caregiver and close friend. She never had children and chose to trust me with many of her personal belongings such as letters between her and her mother who remained in Mechanic Falls, some documents (1926 graduation certificate) and a few pictures. She loved history and one of the last promises I made to her was that I would try to pass her history and artifacts on to Mechanic Falls Historic Society. She passed June 2010 one month short of her 101st birthday. I found your website today and I hope you would be interested in receiving these items.”

The second event will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, when Percy Turner will discuss the history of the Maine State Police.
