FRYEBURG — A family of three escaped safely from an early-morning fire on Wednesday.

The fire started in the garage, Fryeburg Fire Chief Ozzie Sheaff said. He said the fire is still under investigation but is not suspicious.

The home belonged to Maurice Baillargeon, a captain in the Fryeburg Fire Department. Baillargeon and his wife, daughter and pets escaped safely, along with a friend of their daughter who was staying over. Sheaff said smoke detectors woke the family up.

The call came in around 3 a.m. The garage was completely destroyed, as was the roof of the house, Sheaff said. A car parked in the garage was destroyed too, he said. The house, which Sheaff said was only five to six years old, was insured.

The home is on Route 302 near the intersection with Denmark Road.

Fire departments from Saco Valley, Bridgton, Denmark, Brownfield and East Conway and Center Conway, N.H., assisted the Fryeburg Fire Department.
