FARMINGTON — The 6th Annual End of Summer Hoorah events on Friday and Saturday at the Farmington Fairgrounds will take place as planned but the Sunday car and motorcycle show has been canceled.
“It’s the only decision we could make and be safe,” Stacie Bourassa, executive director of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, said Thursday afternoon.
After consulting with Tim Hardy, Franklin County Emergency Management director, the chamber decided to cancel the Sunday events due to predicted heavy rains and high winds from Hurricane Irene.
The chamber will plan to stage the show next year.
There are some Texas Hold ‘Em Tourney tickets still available for Friday night, she said. They may be obtained by calling Ivan Gould at 491-5074 or calling the chamber at 778-4215.
Players can also arrive at the beano shed between 5 and 5:30 p.m. Friday before the start of the game at 6 p.m. Mike’s Snack Shack and a cash bar are available on the fairgrounds.
Saturday begins with a motorcycle raffle run through Franklin County. There’s no limit and riders are welcome to just show up, she said. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the ride leaves about 10 a.m. Participants will stop in Rangeley for lunch. There is a $10 charge to join the ride.
The admission gate will open at 11 a.m. Saturday for a battle of the bands, which is new this year. The event features six local bands and begins at noon. Local judges will pick a winner who earns a $250 cash prize and two songs professionally recorded by Abrams Audio of Salem.
The battle of the bands takes place in the pulling ring and is followed by another popular event, a Motorcycle Burnout, at 5 p.m. The $5 admission Saturday is for both events. During the burnout, motorcycles are hooked up to a burnout pad so they can’t go anywhere as drivers rev up the motors and smoke the tires.
