Historical meeting
WATERFORD — The Waterford Historical Society will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Waterford Library building during its meeting on Thursday, Sept. 8. This meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at the library, will look at the 1911 design of the building by Maine architect John Calvin Stevens and his son John Howard Stevens.
The rubblestone Colonial Revival building, which began in English Cottage style before a fire in 1937, was redesigned by the same architects in 1938. Traces of the fire were discovered during recent renovations by James Long & Sons. Pictures and blueprints will be on display. There will be potluck refreshments. There is no admission fee.
Harvest supper
LOVELL — A harvest supper will be held at 5 and 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Lovell U.C.C., Route 5, Center Lovell.
Menu includes corned beef, cabbage, vegetables, bread, pie, coffee and lemonade. Adults $8, children under 12 $4.
Auxiliary supper
WATERFORD — The VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post #9328 will host a public supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Harrison VFW, Waterford Road, Route 35. The menu includes homemade baked beans, cole slaw, casseroles, salads, pies and beverages. This supper is a fundraiser for the Ladies Auxiliary. Donations appreciated.
Bottle drive
SUMNER — A Sumner scholarship fund bottle drive will take place Saturday, Sept. 10. Volunteers will drive through Sumner between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to pick up redeemable bottles.
Duplicate bridge
OXFORD — Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge Club met Aug. 8. Finishing first flight A N/S were Marylin and Richard Canton (Bridgton) who also were first in flight B. Second place tie in A were Bailey Geeslin (Bridgton) and Mike Quinn (Otisfield) with Nancy Farmer (Norway) and Marta Clements (Woodstock), fourth were Paul Kahl (Gorham) and Rick Verrill (Gorham) who also were second in flight B. Finishing first in fight C were Jim Krainin (Naples) and Milt McKeen (Bridgton).
Finishing first in flight A E/W were Claire Lyons (Lewiston) and Jim Dickens (Naples) who also were first in flight B, second in A were Penny and Bob Thomas (Bridgton) who also were second in B, third in A were Rosemarie Goodwin (Lewiston) and Luke Merry (New Gloucester). First in flight C were Priscilla Rooth (Brunswick) and Hazel Glazier (Norway), second were Carol Correard (Oxford) and Steve Heiss (Norway).

Fall services
PARIS — Rev. Dr. Robert Sallies will be the worship leader for the first service of the fall season at the First Universalist Church, 36 Pine St., South Paris. The 10 a.m. Sept. 11 service will include the choir, Renee Wales, flutist, Forest Perkins, church organist, a time of celebration for a new season and a time of reflection on the events of 9/11.
The Coffee Hour following in Good Cheer Hall will offer opportunities to learn how members of our congregation shared their talents with “summer” churches in the area. Also, the plans for the new season by our committees can be learned.
It is important to note that this is the church year during which the congregation will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the completion of their magnificent Moller organ.
The Sunday School children are invited to the entire morning service and child care will be provided. Silver Moore-Leamon will complete the September schedule, Sept. 18 and 25. Everyone is welcome.
Square dancing
PARIS — The Swingin’ Bears Square Dance Club will host beginner square dance classes from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 14 and 21. The first three lessons are free at the Oxford Hills Middle School, Pine Street. The lessons will be intermingled with workshops for experienced dancers of various levels who will be ‘angeling’ the beginners. Ray Hilton of Saco will be teaching.

Heart Walk
BRIDGTON — The 3rd annual Bridgton Hospital “Start! Heart Walk” is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 18.
The walk and other activities will be held at Stevens Brook Elementary School. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. and the activities begin at 9:30. There will be a one- and two-mile walk again this year and both walks will go through downtown Bridgton, past area businesses, art galleries and antique shops. The longer of the two walks will wind around by Highland Lake before returning to Depot Street and then back to the school.
There will be post-walk activities including Zumba and massage. There will be a raffle for a Wii and a Wii Fit with tickets available for purchase at the door. Heart healthy food will be provided throughout the day by Hannaford Supermarket and Subway.

Dems barbecue
BRYANT POND — The Oxford County Democrats Summer BBQ has been rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 18, at the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Leadership Center. The event was originally set for Aug. 28 but was rescheduled due to Hurricane Irene.
Congressman Mike Michaud has confirmed for the new date, and former Secretary of State Matt Dunlap of Old Town and Rep. Jon Hinck of Portland, both potential contenders for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in 2012, will be in attendance. Other guests will include Democratic National Committeeman Sam Spencer, and other legislative and party leaders, as well as local legislators.
The program will begin with a Meet & Greet Social Time at 4:30, followed by a cookout meal with all the fixings at 5:30 in the dining hall. There will be an introduction of guests and remarks following the meal.
