WILTON — Police arrested a Chesterville man who they say broke into a garage on Route 133 and stole two cans of gasoline Tuesday morning.

Jaret York, 24, was charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor theft and trespass by motor vehicle, interim Police Chief Richard Billian said.

Two full gas cans were found in the back of his truck, which were identified as belonging to the homeowner, he said.

Leaving the residence, the homeowner noticed a pickup truck at the end of her driveway with a white male inside, Billian said in a release. The homeowner asked if the man was OK and was told he was out of gas but was all set, Billian said.

She left the residence and returned a short time later to find the same truck parked next to the home, which is approximately 300 yards from the road, he said.

Wilton police assisted by Jay Police Department surrounded the home. They heard a noise inside and saw a male walk in front of a doorway in the garage, he said. Police ordered him outside and took him into custody. They searched the home to make sure no one else was inside, he said.

The homeowner told police they had not given permission for anyone to go onto the property or inside the residence, Billian said.

Police say York’s truck had a quarter tank of gas at the time of his arrest.

“I am glad to see property returned to the homeowner, the burglar brought to jail” and no one hurt, he said.

York was being held at Franklin County Detention Center late Monday afternoon on $500 cash bail.
