Le Messager, the leading French newspaper in Lewiston, published its first edition from its new quarters on Lisbon Street, Friday. It is understood that J. B. Couture, the proprietor, will publish daily beginning in 1912.

50 years ago, 1961

The firm of Henry Nolin Jeweler Inc. of 83 Lisbon St., Lewiston, will observe its silver anniversary Monday and will have a gala open house for its customers, old and new, which will feature free gifts. The firm is headed by Henry Nolin of Lewiston as treasurer and Louis Albert of Lewiston as president. The firm started back in 1936 with Nolin as the sole clerk, watch repairer and all-purpose jeweler. It was first located at 79 Lisbon St., and moved to the present address in 1951.

25 years ago, 1986

Unemployed shoe workers who were laid off from Etonic Inc., in Auburn are eligible to receive special relief benefits because of tough import competition, the State Department of Labor said Monday.

Michael Carrie, field supervisor for the department’s job service, said “the award was made today” by the U. S. Department of Labor after Etonic had applied for the benefit on May 1.
