NEW SHARON — On Aug. 20, 14 teams comprised of 50 golfers gathered at the Sandy River Golf course for LEAP’s 5th annual golf scramble and skills challenge. This year, participants competed for the initial inscription on the “LEAP Cup.” The fun started at 11 a.m. with golf challenges and hors d’oeuvres from King and I Angus, Crooked Face Creamery and milk from Sandy River Farms.

Winners of the skill challenges were as follows: The Golden Putter went to Andrew Whittaker, the Golden Chipper to Darryl Wood Sr. and the Golden Iron to Mike Viles.

The Golf Scramble Tourney commenced at 1 p.m., and the winning team of Winona Davenport, Duane Stefani, David Anderson and Brad Orbeton, aka Team Justafield, came in at a score of one over par 30, inching out two other teams tied at 31. Within the scramble were the women’s long drive champion Heidi Haylock, men’s long drive champion Duane Stefani, and the closest to the pin was Rock Bjorn.

After the scramble, golfers enjoyed an authentic barbecue supplied by the Top of the Hill Grill in New Sharon.
