NEW VINEYARD — Deputies are pursuing leads after a burglary Monday at a residence on Wells Road netted thieves an estimated $24,000 in property.

Eight guns, several thousand dollars in U.S. currency, a gun safe and prescription drugs were taken between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Monday, Franklin County Sheriff Lt. Niles Yeaton said Tuesday.

The homeowner was not home at the time. A neighbor tending the owner’s animals discovered the burglary at about 6:45 p.m., Yeaton said.

“We do have a couple of leads that we are following now,” he said.

Deputy Nathan Reid responded to the burglary report along with other deputies.

A green, stand-up, Sentry gun safe, about 5 feet tall, was taken along with seven rifles and one pistol, Yeaton said.

“It would have taken at least two people to carry the safe,” he said. Deputies believe it was put in a vehicle and driven away.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at 778-2680.
