LEWISTON —   If you were driving by Don Roux field around 10 o’clock Friday night and saw the scoreboard, you might have thought the Lewiston Blue Devils basketball team was playing against Cony.

Both teams combined for 49 points in the fourth quarter as Lewiston held on for a thrilling 62-49 victory in a Class A football slugfest.

Seniors Jeff Turcotte and Joe McKinnon made the most of their final home game combining for almost 500 rushing yards and scoring nine touchdowns between the two.

Cony wasted no time getting on the board in the first quarter, splitting the drive with runs and passes, with Thon Ithapalakorn punching into the end zone with a 2-yard touchdown. Lewiston answered with a pair of strong drives, smashing the ball on the ground with McKinnon and Turcotte taking a 14-7 lead.

“We knew we hadn’t been playing up to our potential and we just wanted to get something going early,” said the senior halfback.”Our line was a beast tonight. They deserve a lot of credit.”

Turcotte scored both Lewiston touchdowns to round out a 14-7 first quarter lead for the Blue Devils. Senior Kevin St. Pierre captured back-to-back sacks on Cony’s quarterback Benjamin Lucas, shifting the momentum defensively Lewiston’s way.

After Cony tied the score, Turcotte struck again, taking the third snap of the drive and sprinted down the sidelines for an 82-yard TD. After trading touchdowns, Lewiston got the final score of the half, with McKinnon dashing in from two yards out. The Blue Devils took 34-21 lead into the half.

Both squads came out a little tight in the third quarter offensively, with both teams struggling to get first downs. Brandon St. Michel scored the quarter’s lone TD for Cony on a 2-yard run, cutting into Lewiston’s lead heading to the fourth quarter.

But the fourth quarter was a different story.

McKinnon took control of the ball on the ground scoring three touchdowns while rushing for 132 yards in just nine fourth-quarter carries. McKinnon finished the game with 240 yards rushing on 25 carries and four touchdowns. Turcotte ended with 257 yards on 30 carries, scoring five touchdowns.

“I remembered senior game last year and it was pretty emotional,” said McKinnon. “I wanted to do something special tonight because this is it.”

Cony’s Lucas did all he could to keep the Rams in the game. Lucas finished the game with 230 yards while connecting on 20 of 31 passes. He also threw a touchdown and rushed for another.

“They like to pass,” said Lewiston coach Bill County. “It’s tough to prepare for a team like this when the rest of the league really doesn’t throw.”

Although giving up 21 fourth-quarter points hardly seems like a defensive effort, Lewiston’s defense battled until the end, stopping Cony when it needed to thanks to St. Pierre and Rudy Pandora.

“They didn’t give up. They wanted to keep playing,” said County.

At 4-4, the Blue Devil players look forward to playing the Red Eddies next week.

St. Michel led the Rams with 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground while hauling down five Lucas passes for 113 yards and another score.
