Historical society

POLAND — The Poland Historical Society will hold its annual meeting Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the society’s District 22 Schoolhouse. The evening will start off with the historical society’s annual potluck supper from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a program at 7 on the history of Morin Brick Company in Danville.

The program will be presented by Norman Davis of Poland. 2012 marks the 100th birthday of the brick company. In 1998 Morin Brick was one of only two operating brick yards in the state. At present, it is perhaps the only commercial brick company.

The brick yard employed a great many local people from Poland over the years, owned many woodlots in Poland, wood cut, hauled and used to fire the kilns at Morins to bake the bricks. Morins ran a sawmill in the winter when they weren’t making bricks. Local men built the kilns, fired the bricks, etc.

All are welcome. Call Louise Roberts at 998-4612 with whether you are bringing a casserole, salad or dessert for the potluck supper.
