FARMINGTON — A welcome sign pointing westbound Route 2 drivers into historic downtown Farmington is missing.

The downtown needs the sign more than the person(s) who took it, Town Manager Richard Davis said Wednesday.

“The Farmington Downtown Association encourages whomever to please bring it back. No questions asked,” said Davis, an association member. “They can either leave it where they found it or at the back entrance to the town office, no questions asked.”

The organization purchased the approximately 4- by 5-foot sign a few years ago for about $750, including the wooden posts holding it.

The posts now stand empty near a small memorial placed where a Connecticut girl was killed in an August accident. The section of road was formerly called Hill Street.

“We suspect it was taken over the weekend,” Davis said, although the exact time is unknown. He reported the missing sign to Farmington police on Monday.

Police have little to go on, Bonnie Pomeroy, department secretary said.

The cost to replace the sign is about $600. It was not insured.

The association was planning to add a message board below the sign to advertise upcoming events, but when Mike Monahan of Signworks in Farmington arrived to add it, there was no sign.

“It’s a nice sign. Farmington needs it more than they do,” he added.
