100 years ago, 1911

At a meeting of the Lewiston City Government last evening, special commendation of the heroism of Officer Michael Moore of the Lewiston police force, for his rescue of 10-year-old Marie Louise Theberge from the canal, Monday noon, was made and it was recommended that steps be taken to secure a Carnegie hero medal for him.

The action which brought about this order was taken by Officer Moore, Monday noon, when, without a moment’s hesitancy, he jumped into the canal to save the drowning girl.

50 years ago, 1961

The Collie Club of Maine will hold an Obedience Training Course for all breeds starting at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday at the Thorne’s Corner Grange Hall. Miss Eleanor Smith, well-known professional dog handler and breeder, will be the instructor for the eight-week course.

25 years ago, 1986

A controversial 154-unit apartment complex was approved by the Auburn Planning Board Thursday night after an agreement was struck during the afternoon between attorneys for the developers and neighbors that abut the property.

The $5 million project will be built on the former Dennis Brickyard site off Brickyard Circle and consist of 14 buildings containing 11 units each. Site work on the initial 55 apartments is expected to begin this fall, while the remainder of the project must still meet approval by the state Department of Environmental Protection.
