LISBON — Lisbon High School principal Kenneth Healey welcomes Barbara White as the new literacy specialist/coach at the school. White has been a middle school and high school English teacher with the Lisbon School Department for 18 years. Prior to her experience in Lisbon, White taught at Brunswick High School, the North Canton, Ohio, junior high school, and also was a literacy specialist in the Augusta schools.

While at Lisbon High School, White has taught a variety of English classes and electives, served as adviser for student publications and began the advanced placement English literature and composition course. In 2007, teachers were required syllabi for AP courses approved by the College Board in order to offer the nationally recognized honors level college preparation courses in local schools. White, and other AP teachers at Lisbon High School, submitted syllabi and successfully established their classes as College Board approved courses that colleges can now reference when students apply to their institutions.

In her new capacity, White is working with teachers to increase literacy skills of students in all content areas. Her job includes guiding teachers in reviewing standardized test scores pertinent to reading, math, writing, social studies and science to help determine ways to design instructional strategies to help students become college and career ready as they complete their high school studies.
