ESTERO, Fla. — Brian Flynn and Spencer Abbott  each had a goal and two assists to lead the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team to a 6-1 victory over Clarkson in the first game of the Florida College Classic on Thursday.

Goals by Flynn, Abbott and Ryan Hegarty gave Maine a 3-0 lead after one period. Adam Shemansky and a shorthanded goal by Mark Anthoine made it 5-0 after two. Joey Diamond added the sixth goal on a power play early in the third period.

Clarkson (9-8-4) got on the board at 9:36 of the third when Louke Oakley tipped a Alex Boak shot past Maine goalie Dan Sullivan (18 saves) to break up his shutout bid.

Maine (7-7-2) outshot Clarkson 36-19 in the game. The Black Bears finished 2-for-7 on the power play, while Clarkson was scoreless in seven chances.

The Black Bears will face UMass in the final on Friday night.

Siena 78, Maine 51

ORONO — Siena shot 59 percent from the field in the first half to jump out to a 15-point halftime lead and went on to defeat the University of Maine, 78-51.

Lily Grenci tallied game highs with 20 points and eight rebounds to lead Siena (2-7), which put three other players in double figures. Guards Cristina Centeno (14 points, six assists, five steals) and Tehresa Coles (12 points, five assists, six steals) also had outstanding games for the Saints.

Danielle Walczak led the Black Bears (3-10) with 13 points and six rebounds, while Samantha Baranowski chipped in with 10 points and five boards. Courtney Anderson added six points and a game-high seven assists.

Florida Gulf Coast 84, Maine 72

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Florida Gulf Coast got to the free throw line early and often to pull away from the University of Maine, 84-72.

Florida Gulf Coast (5-7) shot 30-for-37 from the charity stripe and got in the bonus late in the second half to expand upon a 67-65 lead with six minutes left to play.

Gerald McLemore scored a game-high 26 points for the Black Bears (6-5) while Raheem Singleton came off the bench to score 12 points. Christophe Varidel came off the bench to lead five Florida Gulf Coast players in double figures with 20 points.
