AUBURN — Patricia I. Decker Callaway, 88, a resident of Auburn, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Hospice House of Androscoggin.
She was born Dec. 4, 1923, in Livermore Falls, the daughter of George B. and Mabel (White) Emerson. Upon graduation from Livermore Falls High School in 1940, Patricia earned a degree in teaching from the Farmington Normal School (now known as the University of Maine Farmington), graduating as a member of the Class of 1943, and then completed additional studies at Virginia Commonwealth University.
In 1944 Patricia was married to Alan S. Decker, with whom she had two children and shared 28 wonderful years of marriage, prior to his passing in 1972. She later met R. James “Jim” Callaway, and after being married in 1973, enjoyed an additional 20 years of marriage, until his passing in 1993.
In addition to being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Patricia worked as a grade school teacher throughout the years. She also had both a passion and talent for the arts, and had many hobbies including crafts, knitting, jewelry making, reading, sailing, and skiing. Always a valued and active member of the community, she also enjoyed membership in the PTA, helping out at the library and volunteering at the hospital and for the Red Cross.
She is survived by her grandsons, Shaun Roberts and his wife, Margaret, of Boston, Mass., and Trevor Roberts and his wife, Maria, and their daughter, Vanessa, of North Billerica, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, Jeffery A. Decker; her daughter, Sally Decker Roberts; her brothers, Roland and George Emerson Jr.; and two sisters, Hazel Hall and Berna Briggs.
