To make L-A a “destination,” we have to offer something that is not available anywhere else in the state. Bates Mill No. 5 can offer that as a first-class convention center big enough to handle whatever may wish to come to the state, or several small conventions simultaneously.

It can be done in stages, gradually increasing usable floor space. Installing new hydro-electric generators in the old canal sluiceways would provide most, if not all, of its power needs.

Convention-goers will need places to shop and eat and can help bring downtown back to life.

A new exit off the turnpike near Geiger could provide almost direct access by way of Lincoln Street.

Western Maine has been the state’s stepchild for too long.

Time to take the lead.
