SOUTH PARIS — Barbara and Carol West of the tax office of Barbara A. West EA Income Tax Services, 22 Western Ave., attended the 2011 update school in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and several other seminars throughout the year to keep updated on the complex tax codes.
The two-day workshop was attended by more than 600 tax professionals and included information about tax law changes, innovative products and technologies, handling IRS notices and audits, Social Security, self-employed business and new reporting of capital gains, among other topics.
New this year, all tax preparers have to be registered with the IRS and apply for a Preparer Tax Identification Number to continue preparing tax returns. Unlicensed return preparers must also pass a basic competency test, as well as a tax compliance check and a suitability check.
