DIXFIELD — Ayla Allen took center stage as the Mountain Valley standout made history by eclipsing 1,000 career points in a regular-season ending girls’ basketball game Tuesday night.

Balanced scoring and four players in double figures allowed the Falcons to pull away in the second half to collect a 52-42 win over Dirigo.

Allen scored a game-high 15 points, Makayla White 14, Brooke Dolloff 11 and Chrissy Briggs had 10. It was a pair of treys by White in the fourth that produced a double-digit lead, but Dirigo fought back as Alyssa Wade scored 10 f her 13 points down the stretch.

Class B Mountain Valley (12-6) and Class C Dirigo (8-10) have each qualified for postseason play. The teams had split in two previous games between the rivals, in Rumford. The Falcons won 48-46 and Cougars rallied for a 42-40 triumph.

Allen entered the game 12 points shy of reaching the milestone and had to earn every point because the Cougars deployed multiple defenses against her. The 5-10 senior scored seven points in the third quarter, highlighted by her 1,000th offensive rebound with 2:25 left in the third quarter.

“Its a big relief,”said Allen, who added 12 rebounds and four steals. “But it feels awesome. Every one has been supportive, especially my teammates. I am glad that I could do it here because the Dirigo crowd has been just as supportive.”

Allen scored six points in the first quarter and was held to just one shot in the second quarter. When the historic mark was achieved, the contest was stopped and Allen was presented the game ball by Dirigo athletic director Chris Moreau.

“I was nervous before and during game,”said Allen, while receiving congratulations in Defoe Gymnasium. “Big crowds bother me, and I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the congratulations I’ve worked hard during my career and think I deserve this. I’m going to continue playing basketball at the University of Maine at Farmington.”

Allen is the first true Falcon to score 1,000 points; Lisa Pomperleau reached 1,000-plus points, playing for Rumford and Mountain in the late 1980s.

Dirigo (8-9) had fallen behind 49-36 in the fourth quarter, but came back on two free throws by Kayla Gaudin and Wade (13 rebounds, four assists, four steals) stole the ball and fed Ambyr Wilson for a layup.

Mountain Valley had entered the fourth quarter leading 34-26, but White (three steals) drained a trey and Dolloff (11 points, eight rebounds) sank two free throws, for a 49-36 lead.

“You really have to credit Dirigo,” Mountain Valley coach Tammy Gallant said. “They triple teamed Ayla and had her frustrated. We opened things up for her and had her going to the right.”

 Gretchen Bradbury  had six points and Amanda Shurtleff scored 11.

The Falcons responded with free throws by Katlin Armstrong and a trey by Briggs for a 20-17 lead at halftime.

“Brooke Dolloff really stepped up,” Gallant said. “She was tough in the paint and went after rebounds and loose balls. I enjoy playing Dirigo. They are also a part of RSU10 and show a great deal of sportsmanship and that’s what (the game) is all about.”

Dirigo made five of eight shots and eight of 22 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and had 15 turnovers in the game.

Mountain Valley shot 33 percent and committed turnovers.
