The second in a series of informal talks, arranged by the educational committee of the Women’s Christian Association, Lewiston, was given by Henry A. Free. His subject was “Why Some Girls Succeed in Business,” which proved very helpful to the large number of business girls and others who assembled to hear him. A brief program of music preceded the lecture. There were numbers by a male quartet from Bates College, violin music by Miss Grace Clark, and a song by Miss Edith George,

50 years ago, 1962

In the building committee report given last night at the annual conference of the High Street Methodist Church, it was announced the aims of the group are to have the new church in use next fall. The highlights of 1961 were the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new church on Park Avenue, Auburn, on Oct. 8 and the Centennial Week observance Oct. 15 through 22. The report was given by Clarence Cole, associate chairman of the committee.

25 years ago, 1987

A Lewiston man is in critical condition at Central Maine Medical Center following a train-car collision on Friday afternoon on Stetson Road at a crossing where local officials have tried to have signals installed for years.

The driver suffered severe head injuries when the car he was driving west on Stetson Road struck the right front of the lead engine of a northbound Maine Central Railroad train at the Stetson Road crossing, according to police.

There are no signals at the crossing, although city and state funds have been appropriated to install them, according to state Rep John Telow. Telow said he has been trying to get signals installed at the crossing, which is in his district.
