AUBURN — Linwood R. Hinkley, 60, of Wilton, passed away Monday, Feb. 20, at the Hospice House with his family was by his side after a courageous 10-year battle with Thyroid cancer.

He was born Oct. 19, 1951, to Loreston L. Hinkley and Alice (Flagg) Hinkley. He grew up “on the farm” in New Vineyard. He attended the Roosevelt Grammer School in New Vineyard, Farmington High School and graduated from Scarborough-on-Hudson High School in Scarborough, N.Y. He attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn.

Linwood worked for Foster Manufacturing of Stratton, Kingfield Wood Products, G.H. Bass of Wilton and was working for New Page of Rumford until his health forced his retirement in 2011.

On Aug. 21, 1976, he married Deborah Heath at their home in Farmington Falls. They moved to East Dixfield in November 1976, and in November 1989, moved to Wilton, where they made their home.

Linwood lived life with an open mind, sense of humor and positive attitude. He believed you should read something every day, the more variety the better. Linwood was a man of many passions. He enjoyed writing poetry, gardening, watching birds and until cancer prevented him, he was on a bowling league.

He loved the Bangor Music Festival, Flaggstaff Lake and the Skye Theatre. He was most passionate about his grandchildren and the time they spent together.

Linwood had a heredity thyroid cancer. He was diligent in teaching others about this cancer so they would not have to travel the same path as he did. He supported his boys in their youth activities and also coached YABA and was involved in Scouts.

In support of Linwood, family and friends formed a Relay for Life team called Linwood’s Ladies which he has participated in for the last three years. Linwood’s childhood dream was to own a small town store. On May 1, 2011, it became a reality. Linwood and his wife, Deborah, purchased a store in New Vineyard which they named “Our Village Market,” formerly “My Wife’s Place.”

Linwood is survived by his wife, Deborah Hinkley of Wilton; their two sons, Matthew Hinkley and wife, Sherry, of New Vineyard and Scott Hinkley of Wilton; their grandchildren, Samantha HInkley, Paul Hinkley and Valerianne Hinkley; his siblings, Betty Iezzi and husband, John, of Rumford, Kenneth Hinkley and wife, Linda, of Dixfield, Ernest Hinkley and wife, Judy, of Wilton, DeEtte Hinkley of North Jay and Calvin Hinkley and wife, Laura, of Wilton.

He was predeceased by his parents; and brother, Asa.
